WELCOME IN MIDDLE EARTH

Maike arrived last Sunday and hasn’t been that lucky with the weather yet - just rain and strong winds for the last days. Well, that’s winter in Auckland, but we hope for some sunny days.
After finishing school, Maike first did a commercial apprenticeship and after that decided to study International Business in Bad Nauheim, close to Frankfurt. Here in Auckland she will do a three month internship in the area of Human Resources and Team Development. Enjoy your stay!
WINTER IN AUCKLAND

Some thought - provoking impulses for cold, rainy and windy winter days:
- Dreaming of balmy days and warm tropical waters? The balmy days might be an airplane ride away, but the warm waters are all around us. Top of the list is the Waiwera Thermal Resort and Spa (State Highway 1, 25 minutes North of Auckland, phone 427 8800) – the perfect place to while-away a cold winter’s day with its 26 indoor and outdoor naturally-heated mineral water pools & sauna & steam room & Jacuzzi)
Other favourite hot spots: Miranda Hot Springs (Front Miranda Road, off State Highway 2, 45 minutes south of Auckland, phone 07 867 3055) and the Palm Springs Thermal Pools (155 Parkhurst Rd, Parakai, phone 420 8321)
- Indoor action – for a whole lot of fun without getting wet, get some friends together and organise an adrenalin-filled outing at Extreme Indoor Karts (82 Kerwan Ave, East Tamaki, phone 273 5552). Here you can race 6hp-engined karts round sweeping bank curves, through an underpass and down steep hills.
Or, put on a futuristic space suit and head for LaserForce (21 Link drive, Warau Park, phone 444 1011) where you can spend hours zapping your opponents as you race through the maze-like space station.
Why not go hard-out at Urban Combat (Unit 3, 57 Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga, phone638 711) – where you can play indoor paintball.
What about testing your head for heights at Extreme Edge Indoor Rock Climbing (40c Morrin Rd, Panmure, phone 574 5677) – the largest climbing centre in Australasia with over 200 different routes or The Rocknasium (610 Dominion Rd, Balmoral, phone 630 5522).

AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
July 9 - 25
Founded in 1970 as a component of the Auckland Festival, the Auckland International Film Festival in time became a fund-raising event subsidising live arts. Rescued from this role by the intervention of the Federation of Film Societies in 1984, the 30th Festival in 1998 achieved an audience of 86,500. The year 2000 marked the Festival’s return to the fabulously refurbished Civic Theatre, the South Pacific’s most insanely beautiful picture palace.
Lots and lots of really interesting movies, like:
In My Father’s Den (NZ/UK)
Fahrenheit 9/11 (USA)
Hero (China)
Kamchatka (Argentina/Spain)
Free Radicals (Austria/Germany/Switzerland) ….

GOMEZ – splitting the difference
July 10, The Studio, Auckland
Good noise? Perhaps great noise, amazing noise, psychedelic noise, soulful noise, chaotic noise, beautiful noise....
The tour will support the release of Gomez’s fourth album "Split The Difference", an album packed with straightforward – or at least relatively straightforward – rock songs. Adding to their already expansive live repertoire; which includes the brilliant and occasionally obtuse experimentation that came with past albums Liquid Skin, Bring It On, Abandoned Shopping Trolley, and In Our Gun, these shows will most certainly be an experience not to be missed.
THE BAR AT BUENA VISTA
July 13, 8pm, ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
The supergroups of Cuba will be touring New Zealand in July with the best Cuba has to offer in music and dance in The Bar at Buena Vista.
Featuring original members of the Buena Vista Social Club, Afro-Cuban All Stars and Vieja Trova Santiagera, this will be a once only New Zealand Tour.
The Bar at Buena Vista - pays homage to the Buena Vista neighbourhood and the stars of the Buena Vista Social Club via the music of legends such as the late Compay Segundo and Ruben Gonzalez. It is a dedication to the original spirit of the music of Cuba, the lifeblood of a people whose heritage is as rich as it is old. A cast of Cuba's most notable and legendary musical greats, drawn from renowned groups like the Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social Club and Irakere, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Vieja Trova Santiagera and Anakoana inject the music with life and wisdom in a performance of a lifetime in Cuba.
